Majority of MLA-elects want addiction treatment facilities in the N.W.T.

November 20, 2023

CBC North - A majority of the newly elected MLAs have said they would support establishing addiction treatment facilities within the N.W.T. There have been calls for regional treatment facilities since the last one closed in 2013 . Since then, the territory's strategy around addictions treatment involves flying patients south and funding on-the-land programs. Lesa Semmler, incumbent MLA for Inuvik Twin Lakes, says she supports the government establishing addiction treatment facilities. "There may be another opportunity for them to make addictions treatment and facilities a core part of the government's agenda," he said.

Meet the NWT premier and cabinet you told us you want

November 20, 2023

Cabin Radio - Hundreds of people sent us their picks for NWT premier and cabinet after the territorial election. Meanwhile, every MLA-elect we could reach told us they had at least some interest in a cabinet role. So we set up an online survey asking you to select a premier and six other cabinet members – and we received more than 700 responses. Based on this survey, the absence of Wawzonek, Simpson, Cleveland or Semmler from cabinet would be a surprise. We may know who the premier is by the end of November 30, and we are almost certain to know the identities of premier and cabinet by the end of December 7.

There’s a line forming to be in the next NWT cabinet

November 17, 2023

Cabin Radio - Scroll down to tell us who your premier and cabinet would be. In a Cabin Radio post-election survey, no newly elected MLAs ruled out becoming a member of the new seven-person cabinet. Vince McKay said he wouldn’t comment yet post-election (ahead of polling day, he had said he wasn’t interested in a cabinet position). Kieron Testart, RJ Simpson and Shane Thompson all told us they are interested in the role of premier (or, failing that, a role in cabinet). George Nerysoo said he’d be interested in a cabinet role if he was nominated, but added he did not consider it to be a priority.

Key takeaways from the 2023 N.W.T. election

November 15, 2023

CBC North - Northwest Territories voters chose to shake up the Legislative Assembly Tuesday night, voting in just four of the 11 incumbents who ran in contested races, according to unofficial results. Three MLAs-elect return after a hiatus: Danny McNeely in Sahtu and Kieron Testart in Range Lake both served in the 18th Legislative Assembly, but weren't re-elected in the 2019 general election. The MLA-elect handily pushed out Nokleby, who incurred the ire of her colleagues at several points throughout her single term in the Legislative Assembly. Fewer women electedIn 2019, a record number of women were elected to the Legislative Assembly — nine out of 19 MLAs. While three women incumbents were replaced by men, the Dehcho, Nunakput and Yellowknife North ridings will now be represented by women.

Simpson appears to be in control in Hay River North and Lucy Kuptana looks to be the MLA-elect in Nunakput. Rocky Simpson is also out as Vince McKay is the new MLA-elect in Hay River South.

This year, Elections NWT said on Monday, there have already been 489 votes cast in Thebacha using advance voting – a 32-percent turnout before polling day had even begun. In 2019, Thebacha again reported a 32-percent turnout just before election day, and Nahendeh and Hay River South were again second and third. Lastly, don’t forget one standout feature of voting in the NWT: liquor stores must remain closed, by law, while polls are open.

Federal carbon tax exemption on home heating oil won’t apply to N.W.T.

October 31, 2023

CBC North - wants a carbon tax exemption for home heating oil, it'll have to pass its own law for that, says the territory's Liberal MP. New federal rules that exempt some provinces and territories from paying carbon tax on home heating oil won't apply to the N.W.T. because the territory has its own carbon tax legislation. "That discussion has got to be something that the new Legislative Assembly members will have as soon as they're duly elected," McLeod said. But McLeod told CBC Trailbreaker host Hilary Bird Tuesday morning the exemption shouldn't matter anyway, because the carbon tax already comes with a rebate.

7 races to watch in the N.W.T. election

October 30, 2023

CBC North - The issues facing the territory are significant — the election comes after a summer of wildfires, and in the midst of the impending closure of major diamond mines, a declining population and a housing crisis. As the election approaches, here are seven races we think are particularly interesting. Hay River SouthHay River South will feature a rematch of 2019 with incumbent Rocky Simpson facing off against the former infrastructure minister, Wally Schumann. Simpson came under criticism shortly after being elected when it came to light that he owed the N.W.T. Social programs, homelessness and economic issues facing small businesses have been regular campaign topics during past elections in the district.
