Key takeaways from the 2023 N.W.T. election

November 15, 2023

CBC North - Northwest Territories voters chose to shake up the Legislative Assembly Tuesday night, voting in just four of the 11 incumbents who ran in contested races, according to unofficial results. Three MLAs-elect return after a hiatus: Danny McNeely in Sahtu and Kieron Testart in Range Lake both served in the 18th Legislative Assembly, but weren't re-elected in the 2019 general election. The MLA-elect handily pushed out Nokleby, who incurred the ire of her colleagues at several points throughout her single term in the Legislative Assembly. Fewer women electedIn 2019, a record number of women were elected to the Legislative Assembly — nine out of 19 MLAs. While three women incumbents were replaced by men, the Dehcho, Nunakput and Yellowknife North ridings will now be represented by women.

Simpson appears to be in control in Hay River North and Lucy Kuptana looks to be the MLA-elect in Nunakput. Rocky Simpson is also out as Vince McKay is the new MLA-elect in Hay River South.

Cabin Radio - From Elections NWT: Where do I go to vote? Read all our candidate interviewsCabin Radio’s Election Night Live begins on our live stream from 6pm with Ollie Williams. This year, Elections NWT said on Monday, there have already been 489 votes cast in Thebacha using advance voting – a 32-percent turnout before polling day had even begun. In 2019, Thebacha again reported a 32-percent turnout just before election day, and Nahendeh and Hay River South were again second and third. Lastly, don’t forget one standout feature of voting in the NWT: liquor stores must remain closed, by law, while polls are open.

Federal carbon tax exemption on home heating oil won’t apply to N.W.T.

October 31, 2023

CBC North - wants a carbon tax exemption for home heating oil, it'll have to pass its own law for that, says the territory's Liberal MP. New federal rules that exempt some provinces and territories from paying carbon tax on home heating oil won't apply to the N.W.T. because the territory has its own carbon tax legislation. "That discussion has got to be something that the new Legislative Assembly members will have as soon as they're duly elected," McLeod said. But McLeod told CBC Trailbreaker host Hilary Bird Tuesday morning the exemption shouldn't matter anyway, because the carbon tax already comes with a rebate.

7 races to watch in the N.W.T. election

October 30, 2023

CBC North - The issues facing the territory are significant — the election comes after a summer of wildfires, and in the midst of the impending closure of major diamond mines, a declining population and a housing crisis. As the election approaches, here are seven races we think are particularly interesting. Hay River SouthHay River South will feature a rematch of 2019 with incumbent Rocky Simpson facing off against the former infrastructure minister, Wally Schumann. Simpson came under criticism shortly after being elected when it came to light that he owed the N.W.T. Social programs, homelessness and economic issues facing small businesses have been regular campaign topics during past elections in the district.

Wawzonek, acclaimed as MLA, says getting N.W.T. communities off diesel is a main priority

October 30, 2023

CBC North - Caitlin Cleveland was acclaimed as the only candidate for Kam Lake, Caroline Wawzonek was acclaimed for Yellowknife South, and Jane Weyallon Armstrong was acclaimed for Monfwi. However, to get there we must overcome high costs of living and high costs of doing business. Key drivers of high costs are energy and transportation which contribute to high costs both directly as well as indirectly in terms of the higher costs for local goods and services. We need to pursue pathways off diesel and modernization of energy infrastructure capable of adapting to new technologies including intermittent renewables. We need to ensure our students are healthy and appropriately educated to meet these labour market needs and that education opportunities are relevant to near-future labour market needs.

She had just received confirmation that she was acclaimed and she will serve a second term as the MLA for Yellowknife South. Acclaimed candidates don’t have much to do except prepare for their next term in office, but Wawzonek won’t be without work. October 20, 2023

CBC North - Transparency always a good thingA public vote for premier isn't a new idea; it's one that's discussed in almost every election. He says that a public vote for the N.W.T. NWT Election 2023: Nominations closed but lists aren’t quite final

October 20, 2023

Cabin Radio - Sahtu candidate Paulie Chinna was among the last names added to the list of nominees in this fall’s NWT election before the window for candidates to step forward closed. Chinna, the housing minister, appeared at almost the last moment before the five-day nomination period closed at 2pm on Friday. It’s also possible that nominations received at the last minute have not yet been added to Elections NWT’s published list. Kuptana had appeared likely to secure an acclamation in Nunakput but Teddy’s name appeared on the list shortly after 2pm. No NWT election has had more than three acclamations since five were recorded in 2003.
